We do everything to make the life of the Nishikigoi as pleasant as possible. Filter systems, water conditioners, good nutrition and a biological balance in the pond are of great importance and much attention is paid to them.
Despite our good care of the Nishikigoi, she is susceptible to various diseases and parasitic diseases. Not only the resistance of the Koi but also the activity of the parasites/bacteria is at a higher level at the higher summer temperatures. There are several reasons why in summer, despite the good conditions, problems still arise. In the summer period we find in the top five common diseases, the following parasites: Trichodina, Costia, White spot, Chidonella and worms. A parasite is an organism that lives at the expense of its host. That a parasite is harmful to your Nishikigoi is determined by the type of parasite, but especially by the immunity of the host.
Furthermore, more and more bacterial problems also occur in the warmer months. The main causes of the diseases are: changes or additions to the fish stock without quarantine, too short quarantine periods (at dealers or at home), the higher temperatures, lower quality food and poor water quality. As with the emergence of diseases in the spring, you have an influence on this.
Fortunately, reliable medications are then available to restore the Nishikigoi to health. We always recommend that you consult a veterinarian or expert in experience and apply medicinal remedies under supervision.
Wound Treatment
Wound care is the care of a wound where the cause of the wound is addressed and infection can be prevented. If the wound is serious and you have no experience with treating a wound, consult an expert.
For wound treatment, one needs the following items:
- A scoop net suitable for koi
- A koisock
- An anesthetic tank
- Disinfectant liquid (alcohol 70% or hydrogen peroxide)
- Propolis Woundseal / Propolis Tincture
- Narcosis
- Microscope
- Glazing
- Sterile gloves
- Pincet
- Scissors
- Cotton swabs
Proper wound management
If you are going to treat a wound make sure you have all the necessary items ready. Fill the treatment container with pond water and add the anesthetic solution (note instructions for use). Let this stand for a few minutes. Catch the Koi and transfer it to the treatment tank Wait until the Koi lies down on its side. Do not leave the Koi in the anesthetic solution for too long. Lay the Koi on a damp clean cloth and cover the head.
Take the disinfectant and rub it vigorously in and around the wound . Remove loose, or broken scales. When cleaning the wounds, use cotton swabs. These are dipped in hydrogen peroxide and then the wound is thoroughly cleaned. The scales around the wound must also be carefully cleaned. This means that with the cotton swabs under every surrounding scale that one can get under with the cotton swab one should definitely and thoroughly do so as well. Only when one clearly sees that there is less dirt coming from the wound and under the scales can one speak of a good wound treatment. Never dip the same side of the swab twice, but simply turn it over and use the new clean side.
Rub the wound area clean with a finger, then dab the wound with a cotton swab with some disinfectant liquid attached. Apply a layer of Propolis Woundseal / Tincture on the wound. Wait a few seconds for the ointment to take effect and then place the Koi back in the pond. The Koi should now still be monitored whether he recovers well. You can rock the Koi back and forth under the water surface for a few minutes, this will flush the gills and the Koi will come to more quickly.
The propolis used by House of Kata is guaranteed free of waxes. And thus safe to use for your Nishikigoi without the chance of adhesion of the gill flaps.
Some important tips:
- If the Koi stays out of the water longer than expected, flush some water into the gills regularly.
- Never place multiple Koi in the anesthesia tank.
- Never lose sight of the anesthetized Koi.
